Types of Course Options

LAC Recitation Sections are weekly 50-minute group discussions in the target language, offered for lecture courses that require a recitation section. LAC recitation sections function like normal recitations, except that selected readings and assignments are completed in the target language. Students who participate in a LAC recitation can receive one graded hour of language credit (ARAB 308, FREN 308, GERM 389, ITAL 308, SPAN 308, or SWAH 408) in addition to the normal course credits.

Supplementary LAC Discussion Sections are weekly 50-minute group discussions in the target language, linked to courses that do not normally require a recitation section. Supplementary LAC sections enable students to complete short readings and assignments related to the linked course in the target language. Students who participate in a supplementary LAC section can receive one graded hour of language credit (ARAB 308, FREN 308, GERM 389, ITAL 308, SPAN 308, or SWAH 408).

Combined LAC Discussion Sections are weekly 50-minute group discussions in the target language (often a less commonly taught language), linked to two or more related courses. Students complete short readings and assignments in the target language on interdisciplinary themes or issues common to the linked courses. Students who participate in a combined LAC discussion section can receive one graded hour of language credit (ARAB 308, FREN 308, GERM 389, ITAL 308, SPAN 308, or SWAH 408).

LAC Seminars are independent three-credit courses taught entirely in the target language.

LAC Research Components offer students the opportunity to complete course projects or papers in the target language, with assistance provided by a faculty member or graduate student. Students do not receive extra course credit, but are given a certificate of completion.

FAQ

How

The enrollment procedures differ according to the type of course option:

For LAC Recitation Sections, there are two separate steps:

  1. Required: When you enroll in the lecture, you will also need to enroll in the LAC recitation section. If you don’t know the recitation number, click on each section number in Connect Carolina to bring up the class detail view; the LAC section will contain a short description in a “Notes” box (ex: “This course is taught in Spanish. To receive one hour of Spanish-language credit, also register for SPAN 308 sec 004).  If you receive an error stating that you need department consent, contact the LAC coordinator at lac@unc.edu.
  2. Optional: If you wish to receive the additional credit hour in the foreign language for participating, you must also enroll ARAB 308, FREN 308, GERM 389, ITAL 308, SPAN 308, or SWAH 408.  To make sure you enroll in the correct section, click on the section number in Connect Carolina to bring up the class detail view; the linked course will be listed in the “Notes” box.

For Supplementary LAC Discussion Sections, simply enroll in the appropriate foreign language credit hour (ARAB 308, FREN 308, GERM 389, ITAL 308, SPAN 308, or SWAH 408). To make sure you enroll in the correct section, click on the section number in Connect Carolina to bring up the class detail view; the linked course will be listed in the “Notes” box.

For Combined Discussion Sections, simply enroll in the appropriate foreign language credit hour (ARAB 308, FREN 308, GERM 389, ITAL 308, SPAN 308, or SWAH 408).  To make sure you enroll in the correct section, click on the section number in Connect Carolina to bring up the class detail view; the linked course will be listed in the “Notes” box.

What

There is no strict language prerequisite for enrolling in LAC.  At minimum, we recommend that students have already completed four semesters of language study (i.e. ARAB 204, FREN 204, GERM 204, ITAL 204, SPAN 204, SWAH 404). Since group discussion plays a central role in LAC sections, students should be prepared to actively participate in the target language. Some students may reach this proficiency level by working, studying, or traveling abroad; others may feel more prepared after taking a conversation course (ARAB 223, FREN/SPAN 255, GERM 301). If you are unsure about your language skills, if you haven’t used the target language recently, or if you are a native/heritage speaker, contact an instructor or the LAC coordinator instructor to arrange a brief assessment interview.
